Parents, please sign and return one copy of the Mid-Quarter report sent home on Friday. I've reprinted the suggestions included in that report for your review.

Suggestions: Your child will succeed if we all monitor his or her dedication to school work. 1) Please establish a routine that includes a predictable block of time for the completion of homework each night. 2) Please check your child’s binder nightly, and remove graded work from the Returned Work folder. 3) Discuss the graded work with them, and suggest ways they could improve. 4) Check Engrade every few days to identify areas where your child needs to work harder. You can also see which assignments your child failed to turn in, and then help them address the missing items. Many parents print out a list of the missing work and then send it back to school with the child. I am happy to help your child fill in the gaps. Also, you can see notices and updates from me on Engrade, or message me back with any concerns you have. 5) Once your child completes the homework, make sure everything gets back in their binder and book bag and leaves with them in the morning.

I recently sent a short message (this one) to all of you via Engrade to confirm that the lines are open between us. Please respond so that I know you received this message. I’d also like to know how often you visit the classroom homepage. Some of you already make good use of Engrade, both for checking grades and messaging. Please keep it up. Even short notes about things that concern you help me work with your child more effectively. I tell the students that Engrade keeps everybody on the same page; you know where you stand, your parents know, and of course, I know. Believe me, this is a powerful combination that produces results. (Posted 09.08.11)

Please note that I've turned off the Discussion feature for individual lessons in Engrade. I realized that some parents thought that the comments came directly to me, when in fact they were available to all users. In addition, some students were using the feature to message each other. All parents and students can still message me directly using the Messages tab at the top of screen. This is a great feature, and I would encourage all parents to stay in touch using this system. This year I’ve started flagging work with yellow paper to identify areas of concern. I’d like all parents to keep an eye out for these yellow notes and to discuss my suggestions with your child. I would also like parents to initial these notes and send them back to school. By doing this, I hope to keep both of us focused on areas where progress needs to be made. (Posted 08.29.11)

Welcome to the new school year! I have just a couple of quick items to mention today. Some of you had not yet registered with Engrade, so I've gone ahead and taken care of that. Please make sure that your child knows his user name and password because we use the program nearly every day in class. Currently there is an open literature quiz that all students need to take. Check with your child to confirm that they have completed this.

There is a new feature on Engrade this year that allows you to comment on assignments. Please note that these comments can be seen by all users connected to our classroom. If you want to message just me use the message tab at the top of the screen.

Last week I sent home a yellow sheet stapled to your child's work. The example showed an assignment that hit most of the standards I shoot for. Please review this sheet with your child and initial it. (Posted 08.23.11)
